As one of the top coo- pers in the area, José Antonio was the person who made the barrels for all of the big Sherry houses. After years of making barrels for everyone else he came to the conclusion that he could produce Sherries that were better than what the big Sherry houses were cranking out, so he went about open- ing up his own little winery.

This little up-start Sherry producer was not wel- comed in world of nobility-owned Sherry houses and so the local gentry did everything they could to stop him. Fortunately the quality of his sherry prevailed over their efforts and José Antonio Si- erra became one of the top Almacenistas (stock- holders) of high quality Sherries. Poking fun at his struggle, the label depicts an allegorical fox hunt with the nobles hunting El Maestro Sierra’s fox.

Vinification: This Oloroso is aged for 15 years in the solera system.

Tasting Notes: Incredibly complex aromas of hazelnuts and exotic spices. The blend brings together four grains—rye, corn, barley, wheat—with no one grain being dominant. While we can’t name names, these are whiskies from distilleries with rabid followings. We were lucky to sneak in when we did. Some of the barrels we sourced for B&E would be impossible to get today. But at St. George, we usually aren’t content to leave well enough alone. According to Dave, “As good as the sourced barrels were, it was only when I started blending them with our own malt whiskey that I realized we were on to something truly worthy of the Breaking & Entering mantle.”

When we launched the B&E label in 2011 with our Breaking & Entering Bourbon, we deliberately chose the name in order to be transparent about the fact that whiskey made under the B&E label uses barrels we pilfered from other distilleries. We also wanted to distinguish our barrel-thieving side hobby from our own longstanding in-house whiskey program (which began in 1996 when we started laying down barrels for our St. George Single Malt Whiskey, and subsequently added to with our Baller Single Malt Whiskey).

On the nose, you'll find toffee, candied orange peel, cinnamon, and cherry bark. Tomeu has demonstrated this ancient variety has incredible potential, creating some of the most groundbreaking wines of the Balearic region. Only indigenous yeasts are used, and his vineyards are worked without the use of chemical treatments, farming organically. A key to practicing this type of agriculture is the Levante winds, which blow across Mallorca from northeast to southwest off the island of Minorca, cooling and aerating the vineyards, which are almost always windy.

His "Son Agulló" is sourced specifically from a tiny parcel, less than a hectare in size, of 60 year old vine Mantonegro. The first release ever of "Gió" has arrived! As many of you know we are huge fans of Selvagrossa, a winery located on the outskirts of Pesaro in the Marche region of Italy. Alberto Taddei is making incredible wine from his small family winery. Alberto has a few tricks up his sleeve, and this year he produced a special red vermouth that is about as delicious as it gets. While this is red vermouth, it is actually made from a blend of Trebbiano, a white grape varietal, and Sangiovese, the classic red grape of Central Italy. Another secret to the recipe is the inclusion of elderflower, which is very typically grown in the area. Alberto had help from the two ultra-talented young ladies behind Distilleria Magnoberta. They help blend the wine with the spirit, secret recipe of roots, and elderflower. Named after Gioacchini Rossini, the famous Italian composer, who is from Pesaro. Fermentation is in tank, with aging for 13 months in old oak barrels as well as vats. The wine is fermented and aged in tank. Beautiful honeyed notes, orange blossom, lemon peel and a balanced attack. It is a wine that you taste, and say "wow." As I mentioned in the introduction, it is one of the greatest Italian red wines I've ever had.
